TTEC's MVD Thermowells are designed for applications where thermowells will be exposed to highly abrasive conditions such as are found in Power Plant Coal Pulverizers. Product life has always been a problem in these applications, where barstock wells can be eroded away within short periods of time. For these difficult applications, TTEC designed Thermowells which utilize a process known as Mechanical Vapor Diffusion (MVD).
Tungsten Carbide is fused with the thermowell material and becomes an integral part of the mass of the well. A new and substantially harder thermowell is the result of the MVD Process.
The MVD Process is normally applied to the insertion portion of the Thermowell. When applied, the significant increase in wear life is achieved without sacrificing the corrosion or temperature features of the thermowell material.

TTEC manufactures Thermocouple Assemblies for severe high temperature corrosive environments. These assemblies utilize an HR160 Thermowell or Protection Tube.
HR160 is a solid, solution strengthened NI-Co-Cr-Si Alloy with outstanding resistance to various forms of high temperature corrosion attack.
Outstanding High Temperature Corrosion Resistance. High levels of Cr & Si combine to form a very protective surface Oxide scale that resists attack from Sulfur, Chlorine, Fluorine, Vanadium, Phosphorous & Salt deposits to 2200 ºF (1204 ºC).
Life extensions greater than 10x compared to Ni-Cr alloys & stainless steels are common.
Metal Ceramic, Grade LT-1 - hard, abrasion-resistant and dense - is a slip-cast composite of two compatible high temperature materials, chromium and aluminum oxide. Products made from Grade LT-1 material possess three properties of particular interest:
Superior oxidation resistance to 2500ºF
Thermal conductivity comparable to that of stainless steel
Good resistance to wetting by most molten metals
By the very nature of its constituents, metal-ceramic LT-1 exhibits properties that are not found solely in either a metal or pure ceramic alone. LT-1 has excellent oxidation resistance and also resists wetting by many metals and alloys, as well as basic furnace slags. The chromium-metal phase takes on a very tightly bonded layer of chromium oxide which, together with the naturally inert nature of the alumina, provides this material with its remarkable resistance to oxidizing atmospheres over 2200ºF, good corrosion resistance, and the ability to resist wetting by molten metals.
High thermal conductivity and the resultant excellent sensitivity to temperature changes accounts in part for its demand In the high- temperature pyrometry field as a thermocouple protection tube.
LT-1 has good strength at temperatures where many high-temperature metals melt. Above about 2800ºF, it begins to soften and becomes plastic. LT-1 thermocouple protection tubes have, however, been used successfully for dip immersion at a temperature of 3000ºF. In use or service, care must be taken to avoid conditions*of extreme thermal shock, extreme thermal gradients, mechanical shock, and impact. Although LT-1 is superior to ceramics in all of these properties, it is less resistant to shock and impact than the metallic alloys. Therefore, a standard thermocouple protection tube should be preheated to about 900ºF before immersion in molten metal at 2000ºF or higher. Whenever practical the following preheat procedure can also be used: Hold the tube immediately above the molten metal for approximately one minute before immersing. In tests conducted this procedure proved to be adequate to prevent thermal shock failure.
Metal-ceramic LT-1 exhibits good resistance to wear under conditions of sliding friction as well as resistance to abrasion at high temperatures. The hardness of this material (Rockwell C 37) is more indicative of the crushing strength of the material than its true hardness because the individual particles have a greater hardness than the combined body.
Metal-ceramic LT-1 is less porous than most compacts. There is no significant passage of gases through the body at high temperature, except under high vacuum. For the usual industrial application, it is sufficiently impermeable. For example, SO2 and SO3 gases have not penetrated LT-1 thermowells over a three-year period to affect thermocouple wires.
Techoloy: The Most Corrosion / Erosion Resistant Material Commercially Available Techoloy outperforms other materials in the most corrosive/erosive environments. It is wear and corrosion resistant, as well as impermeable, which makes it ideal for use in strong acids and alkalies. And, since they are non-toxic, Techoloy components can be used in food and drug service applications.
Techoloy Ideal for Rugged Thermocouple Tube Applications Its impressive capabilities at temperatures in excess of 1600°C (2950°F) make Techoloy an ideal candidate for thermocouple tubes. High thermal conductivity provides rapid response times and high thermal transfer. Superior thermal shock and creep resistance assures long component life. Because it contains no free silicon, Techoloy provides superior chemical resistance in both reducing and oxidizing environments, with or without abrasive / erosive elements. Techoloy tubes are impermeable to gases at 4500 lb/in2 (31 MPa) and have a very fine grain structure (5- 10 microns) for excellent wear resistance and strength.
Techoloy Protection Tube Applications Applications range from high-pressure velocity environments in refinery and chemical plants to very caustic abrasive slurries in the paper industry. Techoloy tubes are used successfully in mineral processing and calcination, non-ferrous melting and refining, high temperature process furnaces, chemical incinerators, recuperators and corrosive chemical processing streams. The material's temperature capabilities have made it extremely effective in the coal processing industry as well, including gasification at temperatures above 1600°C (2950°F).
